Linnaeus devised the system of \u201cbinomial nomenclature,\u201d which uses only two designations \u2013 genus and specific epithet as the species name.<\/p>\n<p>In the mid-1800s, scientists agreed on an expanded system of nomenclature. The following codes are used today:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>International Code of Nomenclature for\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iapt-taxon.org\/nomen\/main.php\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>algae, fungi, and plants<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em>International Code of\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iczn.org\/iczn\/index.jsp\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Zoological Nomenclature<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em>International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria\u00a0<\/em>recently changed to\u00a0<em>International Code of Nomenclature of\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-icsp.org\/publications\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Prokaryotes<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em>International Code of Nomenclature for\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.actahort.org\/chronica\/pdf\/sh_10.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Cultivated Plants<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em>International Code of\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geobotany.org\/library\/pubs\/WeberHE2000_jvs_739-768.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Phytosociological Nomenclature<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em>International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses<\/em><strong>\u2013<\/strong>publishes several reports, including\u00a0<em>How to Write a Virus Name<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Common names of species can differ by geographic region, but a general protocol helps avoid uncertainty and ensures uniformity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itis.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Integrated Taxonomic Information System<\/a> (ITIS) gives you the flexibility to search taxonomic data of a particular plant (and other organisms) based on its common name, scientific name, or taxonomic serial number.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hierarchy\"><\/span><strong>Hierarchy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Known as the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.journal.au.edu\/au_techno\/2001\/oct2001\/howto.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\">taxonomic hierarchy<\/a>,\u201d the system contains numerous groups of species based on genetic and phylogenic characteristics. The highest level is the \u201ckingdom.\u201d The first kingdom comprised just two types of living organisms\u2014animals and plants. We have seven classifications within the kingdom domain\u2014Bacteria, Archaea, Protozoa, Chromista, Plantae, Fungi, and Animalia.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that the\u00a0designations are in Latin. This could be challenging for those who are not familiar with that language, but the terms are consistent worldwide. There is no need to interpret or translate them into another language.<\/p>\n<p>The levels from highest to lowest classification are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kingdom<\/li>\n<li>Phylum<\/li>\n<li>Class<\/li>\n<li>Order<\/li>\n<li>Suborder<\/li>\n<li>Family<\/li>\n<li>Genus<\/li>\n<li>Species<\/li>\n<li>Subspecies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Using this system, the gray wolf, for instance, would be identified as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kingdom: Animalia<\/li>\n<li>Phylum: Chordata<\/li>\n<li>Class: Mammalia<\/li>\n<li>Order: Carnivora<\/li>\n<li>Suborder: Caniformia<\/li>\n<li>Family: Canidae<\/li>\n<li>Genus: Canis<\/li>\n<li>Species:\u00a0<em>lupus<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Binomial_Name\"><\/span><strong>Binomial Name<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>The binomial name consists of a genus name and specific epithet.\u00a0The scientific\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/researchguides.library.vanderbilt.edu\/c.php?g=69346&amp;p=831719\" rel=\"nofollow\">names of species are italicized<\/a>. The genus name is always capitalized and is written first; the specific epithet follows the genus name and is not capitalized. No exceptions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The above instance shows that the classifications go from general (Animalia) to specific (<strong><em>C. lupus<\/em><\/strong>). A species, by definition, is the combination of\u00a0<u>both the genus and specific epithet<\/u>, not just the epithet. For instance, we can use the term\u00a0<strong>gray wolf<\/strong>,\u00a0but we cannot use just\u00a0<strong><em>Canis<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong><em>lupus<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0to describe this animal.\u00a0<strong><em>Canis lupus<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is a species.<\/p>\n<p>The rules for scientific nomenclature vary with the organism. In the case of botanical nomenclature, generally, both the genus and the species names have to be italicized. For protozoans, the genus name, when used in the singular form, should always be in italics. e.g.,\u00a0<em>Leishmania donovani<\/em>. However, when used in the plural form, you need not italicize the genus name. e.g., Leishmania are responsible for causing the disease leishmaniasis.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Animal_Kingdom\"><\/span><strong>Animal Kingdom<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When writing, we use both the scientific and the common name on the first mention. We then choose which to use throughout and make it consistent.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Gray wolf (<em>Canis lupus<\/em>)<\/strong>\u00a0is native to North America and Eurasia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In subsequent references, we can use either the common or scientific name. If we use the scientific name, we only need to use the first letter of the genus followed by a period and the specific epithet. For instance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In North America, the\u00a0<strong>gray wolf\u00a0<\/strong>was all but hunted to extinction.<\/li>\n<li>In North America,\u00a0<strong><em>C. lupus<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was all but hunted to extinction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is also common to refer to several species under one genus when you want to point out similar characteristics within a genus. For instance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All species of\u00a0<strong><em>Canis<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0are known to be moderate to large and have large skulls.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You could also write this information as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Canis<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0spp.<\/strong>\u00a0are known to be moderate to large and have large skulls.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this case, \u201cspp.\u201d is an abbreviation for \u201cseveral species\u201d (\u201csp\u201d is the designation for one species) in the genus. Either of the above is acceptable. If you are focusing on a few species in particular, you would refer to the species name of each one.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You might also see a scientific name followed by an initial or abbreviation. This would denote the person who discovered or named the species. For instance, in\u00a0<em>Amaranthus retroflexus\u00a0<\/em>L., the L (not italicized) refers to the original name given by Linnaeus.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Exceptions\"><\/span><strong>Exceptions<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There are a few exceptions to some of these rules. First, the entire genus name must be spelled out if it begins a sentence, even if a subsequent reference:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Canis lupus<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was all but hunted to extinction in North America.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Second, when more than one species has the same genus initial but come from different genera, the genera names are spelled out to avoid ambiguity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Both the gray wolf (<strong><em>Canis lupus<\/em><\/strong>) and the beaver (<strong><em>Castor canadensis<\/em><\/strong>) are native to North America.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this case, it is best to use the common name after the first mention, but both formats are correct.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Titles_and_Headers\"><\/span><strong>Titles and Headers<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>In titles, it is preferred to write the full scientific name of animals in uppercase letters. For instance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Canis lupus<\/strong>\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0<em>all but extinct in North America<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Plant_Kingdom\"><\/span><strong>Plant Kingdom<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Plant names also follow binomial nomenclature (similar to animal names).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Royal grevillea<em>\u00a0(Grevillea victoriae)<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is found in New South Wales and Victoria.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the\u00a0plant kingdom, classification after species is subspecies (subsp.) and variety (var.). For instance, there are three subspecies of\u00a0<strong><em>Grevillea victoriae.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<em>Grevillea victoriae<\/em>\u00a0subsp.\u00a0<em>victoriae<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Grevillea victoriae<\/em>\u00a0subsp.\u00a0<em>nivalis\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Grevillea victoriae<\/em>\u00a0subsp.\u00a0<em>brindabella<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When the species of a plant is unknown, a plant can be referred to as\u00a0<em>Grevillea<\/em>\u00a0sp.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, when we collectively want to refer a few or all species, we use\u00a0<em>Grevillea<\/em>\u00a0spp.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Similar to animal names, it is common to see a specific epithet that refers to a geographic area or the person who discovered it. For instance,\u00a0<em>Grevillea victoriae<\/em>\u00a0F.Muell. Though these are proper nouns, they are still written in lowercase font. Note that some <em>word processors<\/em> might attempt to <strong>capitalize<\/strong> these references.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is something to check when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trinka.ai\/free-proofreading-tools\">proofreading your text<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cultivar names are dictated by International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants.<\/p>\n<p>When writing, the cultivar name is added after genus or specific epithet and is put in single quotes without italicization. Notwithstanding your choice of a scientific or common name, you must uphold consistency. Always check the author guidelines when preparing manuscripts.
