(Principle Data Scientist, Crimson AI) - Part 1
Join us for an insightful interview with Trinka AI's Principal Data Scientist as he explores the power of NLP, MLOps, and BERT in transforming industries.
Welcome to the Trinka Podcast, where we delve into the world of academic writing and its connection with the advancements in Natural Language Processing (NLP). In this first part of our conversation with Apurva Nagvenkar, the Principal Data Scientist of Crimson AI, we uncover the fascinating insights and experiences he brings from his storied academic career.
The Trinka Podcast is hosted by Dr Krishna Kumar Venkitachalam, who prefers to be referred as Dr KK. He is a surgeon by qualification, but is very passionate about science, communication and languages. Also, he has been in the academic publication industry for the last 15 years.
Apurva introduces himself as the Principal Data Scientist at Crimson AI, responsible for building machine learning models that focus on grammar correction, error correction, paraphrasing, and academic writing enhancement. With a strong academic background and numerous published papers, Apurva's transition from academia to his current role has been an exciting journey.
Apurva shares his experience of starting as a research assistant at Goa University, where he worked on government-funded projects in natural language processing. His involvement included developing NLP resources for Indian languages, collaborating with various universities across India. Following his MTech, he transitioned to the industry, further exploring NLP applications.
While Apurva misses being directly involved in academic circles, his current role keeps him connected to the academic world. He actively engages with researchers, discussing their work and staying updated on the latest trends in NLP. This connection allows him to combine the best of both worlds and contribute effectively to academic writing.
Apurva simplifies the concept of NLP, highlighting its challenge of making machines understand human language. With thousands of spoken languages worldwide, including hundreds in India alone, enabling machines to comprehend and learn these languages poses a complex problem. Despite the prevalence of resources in English, challenges persist in teaching machines the nuances of the language.
Exploring deeper into NLP, Apurva introduces the concept of a morph analyzer. This core component plays a crucial role in breaking down words into meaningful morphemes. By understanding the structure of words and their properties, morph analyzers enhance the machine's comprehension of natural language.
The conversation shifts towards the impact of Chat GPT and similar language models on academic publishing. Apurva highlights how these large language models have revolutionized NLP applications, enabling the solving of complex tasks with minimal data and prompt engineering. The potential for these models to streamline academic writing, from grammar correction to literature reviews, is immense.
Apurva and the podcast host share an optimistic view of the influence of language models in the academic publishing space. They believe that these models can enhance the human mind by reducing the time spent on writing papers and conducting literature surveys. Language models can serve as valuable assistants, allowing researchers to focus more on their core research objectives.
While concerns about job displacement exist, both Apurva and the host emphasize the positive outcomes and potential advancements that language models bring to academic publishing. Instead of replacing roles, these models can augment and empower researchers, editors, and publishers, making the academic publishing process more efficient and effective.
In this enlightening episode of the Trinka Podcast, Apurva sheds light on the intersection of academic writing and NLP. With insights from his experience, he emphasizes the positive impact of language models and their potential to revolutionize academic publishing. As the podcast continues to explore language technology and AI in the academic sphere, the aim is to foster a broader understanding of the possibilities they offer.
