At the AAC&U 2026 sessions, the academic community faced a hard truth: AI is reshaping higher education faster than institutional policies can evolve. To protect the value of a degree, we have to stop focusing on policing and start focusing on process, literacy, and institutional alignment.
AI is becoming increasingly embedded in everyday academic work. If a machine can produce a C plus essay in seconds, students need skills that go far beyond using an LLM. While many students believe technical AI skills are their strongest asset, employers consistently prioritize critical thinking, creativity, and ethics.
A useful way to approach this is to think of AI like weight training. You do not go to the gym to watch a machine lift weights, you train to build strength yourself. In the same way, AI can support the process, but developing independent thinking is what ultimately builds the skills the workforce values.

The focus is shifting toward holistic, rubric based approaches that prioritize student transparency over software scores.
Just as we needed mandatory training to move classes online in 2020, we now need structured faculty development for AI literacy. We are also seeing a major push toward Centralization. Fragmented policies that vary by department lead to inconsistent rules and enforcement. Centralizing academic integrity processes provides better visibility into trends and ensures every student is treated fairly.
To stay ahead, leadership must provide clear guidance for AI use. The Stoplight Framework offers a simple, shared model that helps faculty and students make consistent and defensible decisions across different types of assignments.
Beyond categorization, the framework helps reduce ambiguity, aligns AI use with learning objectives, and ensures more consistent enforcement across courses and departments.

The goal for 2026 is moving from experimentation to alignment.
