Scalable assessment design is one of the most practical ways institutions reduce academic integrity violations before they happen. Rather than scanning finished work for AI signals, well-designed assessments make AI-generated submissions less useful to students in the first place. This means building assignments that require personal context, iterative documentation, and demonstrated thinking, not just a polished final product. When you assess the process, the product becomes harder to fake.
The problem with assessments that were built for a different era
Most assignments in higher education were designed before generative AI existed. Essay prompts asking students to “discuss the significance of X” or “compare and contrast Y and Z” were reasonable assessments of learning a decade ago. Today, any capable AI tool answers them in seconds.
According to a global synthesis published in 2026 across institutions worldwide, reported AI-assisted cheating incidents rose nearly fourfold between 2022 and 2025, from 1.6 per 1,000 students to 7.5 per 1,000. That increase did not happen because students suddenly became less ethical. It happened because the assessment designs did not change while the tools did.
The default institutional response has been to invest in detection. But detection is reactive. It addresses misconduct after a submission arrives, after the work is done, and after the learning opportunity is gone. A more durable approach is to design assessments that make the writing process itself part of the evidence of learning.
What makes an assessment AI-resistant at scale
“AI-resistant” does not mean AI-proof. No assignment type fully eliminates the possibility of AI misuse. What scalable assessment design does is shift the effort required for misuse above the point where it becomes worthwhile for most students.
There are four design principles that do this consistently.
Ground the task in specific, local, or personal context. Assignments tied to a student’s own field experience, a particular data set from the course, or a specific case study discussed in class are harder to offload to AI. The prompt “analyze the data we collected in Week 6 lab and connect it to your own professional background” generates work that has to come from the student. Generic AI tools produce generic outputs. Local specificity breaks that.
Require visible process, not just output. Assignments that include drafts, annotations, or revision logs as graded components shift the evaluative center of gravity away from the final document. A 2025 study in MDPI Education Sciences found that faculty who redesigned assessments to include process submissions cited maintaining academic integrity as a primary motivation, alongside preparing students for AI-integrated workplaces. The draft is not overhead, it is evidence.
Use staged assessment across the submission lifecycle. Single-submission, high-stakes assessments create the highest risk window for integrity violations. Breaking an assignment into check-ins, an outline, a draft, a peer review response, a final version, distributes the assessment burden. It also makes it much harder for a student to insert AI-generated content at the final stage without contradiction from earlier submissions.
Connect the assignment explicitly to learning outcomes. Research from the American Psychological Association notes that when students perceive assignments as directly tied to course mastery goals they care about, academic dishonesty decreases. This is not motivation theory in the abstract. It is a design decision: communicate to students precisely what skill each assignment develops and why they cannot shortcut that development without undermining their own learning.
The scalability problem faculty actually face
Redesigning assessment sounds straightforward in principle. In practice, faculty face a specific constraint: time. Authentic, process-centered assessments take longer to design and longer to grade. This is not a small objection.
The EDUCAUSE 2024 AI Landscape Study found that only 23% of institutions have any AI-related acceptable use policies in place. Separate EDUCAUSE faculty readiness data shows fewer than 30% of faculty feel confident designing AI-resilient assessments. The problem is not faculty resistance to change. It is that redesign without structural support leads to burnout, faculty absorb the full cost of a policy gap they did not create.
Scalable assessment design has to account for this. That means designing rubrics that make process components quick to evaluate, not every draft needs the same depth of feedback as a final submission. It means building assignment banks over time, not trying to redesign every course at once. Starting with one high-risk assignment per course per semester is a realistic goal. It also means sharing design decisions across departments, so the effort is not siloed, and using process documentation tools that automate some of the verification work so faculty spend time on learning conversations, not forensic investigation.
The Oxford University Academic Integrity Framework, revised in 2024, explicitly shifted from detection-first approaches to assessment redesign and transparent disclosure. Stanford’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design has piloted process documentation in select courses, where students submit drafts, annotations, and reflective journals alongside final work. These are not fringe experiments. They are early signals of where the sector is heading.
Why process documentation changes the integrity equation
Even well-designed assessments leave a gap. A student who submits drafts generated in stages by AI, rather than a single final output, is harder to catch. Good assignment design reduces the incentive for that behavior. It does not eliminate the possibility.
Process documentation addresses the residual gap by capturing writing behavior directly. Tools that record keystrokes, revision patterns, reading pauses, and AI content interactions during a writing session produce a different kind of evidence than a finished document provides. You see how the document was built, not just what it looks like at the end.
This matters in three specific ways for faculty managing large cohorts.
First, it removes the need for faculty to make judgment calls based on stylistic suspicion. A student whose session record shows the document was pasted in full at the final minute is documented, not suspected.
Second, it gives students a transparent record of their own effort. When students know their writing session is being captured, they are not being surveilled, they are building a verifiable record of their own process. That record protects them in the event of a false accusation. It also reduces the temptation to misuse AI precisely because the session record makes misuse visible.
Third, it gives academic integrity officers something reviewable in misconduct cases, rather than forcing a confrontation over a probabilistic detector score. Process-based records are specific, sequential, and contestable, the right kind of evidence for institutional proceedings.
Building scalable integrity at the course level, not just the institution level
One structural barrier to assessment redesign is the assumption that integrity reform has to happen institution wide. In practice, the most durable changes start at the course or department level, where a faculty member or integrity officer sees a specific problem and designs a specific response.
You do not need an institution-wide mandate to redesign one essay assignment into a staged, process-documented submission. You do not need a campus policy update to require an annotated draft alongside a final paper. You do need, eventually, some consistency in how those process records is captured, stored, and used. But the pedagogical redesign and the infrastructural question can be sequenced. Start with the design. Build the infrastructure as volume and institutional buy-in develop.
Faculty at individual courses have piloted process documentation approaches and found that the reduction in misconduct cases and the reduction in the administrative burden of investigating those cases, makes the investment worthwhile. The difficulty is making those pilots visible, so institutions learn from them, not just from the cases that become formal proceedings.
From assessment design to submission integrity
Assessment redesign and process documentation are not competing approaches. They operate at different points in the same submission lifecycle. Good assessment design reduces the incentive for misconduct at the assignment level. Process documentation adds the verification layer that makes student process claims reviewable at the submission level.
