Formulation of an AI framework driven by URA: Towards realizing global policies that reflect local realities

Presentation at the Research Manager and Administrator Network Japan (RMAN-J) 2025, by Takayuki Sekine

Generative AI is changing the way we teach and research.

While there are concerns that misuse of AI may undermine the development of students’ critical thinking, promoting ethical AI use is now unavoidable in maintaining the academic integrity of universities. To maintain high-quality research and education, a framework for AI use needs to be formulated with the consensus of all parties involved and put into practice by students, faculty, and staff.

Citing data on AI use collected from academic stakeholders around the world, this poster presents a model in which URAs, who are in a central position to share knowledge with stakeholders in education and research institutions and policymakers, can introduce tools to manage the appropriate use of AI. Transparent writing tracking functions will support conscious AI use and the promotion of academic integrity.

In addition, URAs’ understanding of the actual situation and needs regarding AI use within universities and communicating this to academic stakeholders both in Japan and overseas will also contribute to the development of an international framework.
