AI Course Policy
Beginning May Term 2026, all faculty are required to have given thought to the use of AI in their course and to communicate this and their reasoning to students both verbally and in the syllabus.
This framework uses a simple color-coded system to communicate your AI policies clearly to students.
Hope College requirements to protect data extend to all areas of artificial intelligence (AI). AI tools that are free and/or are not licensed by Hope College in an enterprise manner have the potential to expose this data to both current and future unintended uses. The contracts and business models for AI tools are complex, requiring consideration and analysis beyond what is necessary for non-AI services. Excluding data from training is not, on its own, sufficient; many other protections must be ensured.
While all aspects of this document apply universally to both AI and non-AI situations, for the purpose of clarity:
* Protected data may not be used with any AI tool.
* Google Gemini for Education and Claude by Anthropic are the only AI tools that may be used with Confidential and Internal data, but only when Gemini for Education or Claude by Anthropic is accessed using a Hope College account enrolled in an institutional team/enterprise plan administered by CIT.
* Public data may be used with any AI tool.
The digital instruction specialist has constructed this collection of resources related to generative AI in order to help faculty learn about the capabilities of the technology in connection to teaching and learning.
Artificial intelligence tools that are not explicitly named in this document | Can only be used for Public
Any location/service that has not been contracted by Hope College and vetted by a qualified Hope College employee to ensure security, privacy and compliance | Can only be used for Public
